Summerland Primary is a leading primary school in New Zealand. The school is very popular with teachers throughout New Zealand. We have well over five hundred teachers visit the school each year. They come to look at the special features of our school. Many visitors get pictures, notes, and ideas so that they can replicate the good work they see at Summerland. We are also committed to assisting children who have English as a Second Language (ESOL) and we acknowledge the difficulties they face through communication and cultural differences.
Each student has their English assessed and they are placed in extra classes for up to an hour every day. We have a Korean Teacher employed at Summerland, one of her jobs is to look after our International Students and their parents and families.
Summerland has an excellent programme of teaching English to students. We work very hard at ensuring that all students have a strong grasp of spelling, reading, writing and speaking. Every class does Reading every day. Teachers listen to children reading, teachers read to children and constantly discuss stories and books with children. Our Spelling programme also works closely with Reading. The staff have had extensive training in Spelling and Reading and are considered to be experts in this area. Summerland has an extensive Library which has many books available for all students.
Summerland is a school that embraces technology and is at the leading edge of what is being delivered in New Zealand in the Information Technology area. The key to this is that staff, students and parents alike work together in this exciting area and that we use computers and their software as another tool. Working creatively is our goal. IT is learnt through immersion and therefore becomes an everyday tool for the future. Our website is ever growing and we ask families to use it to interact with the school and our wider community.
We have a strong sporting programme and many students join sports teams. We run events in athletics, cross country running, soccer, rugby and many more sports. Our school is situated close to an international size swimming pool where many students learn to swim. We also are close to a brand new stadium where many students play basketball.
